The Deadwood Jam proved to be an outstanding way to close out summer for lovers of live music and the members of Houdek. Thanks so much to the dedicated families, friends and fans of the band who came out for our set -- it was great to look out from that big stage and see so many familiar faces. Plus, we got to hang around and see some amazing acts. It was good musical medicine.

If you were there, you may have noticed that we played a new song called "Let Go." That tune has already had its public debut, and we're excited about another new one that is nearly ready to roll out called "Break Me". That means Houdek is at work writing new material, so recording can't be far behind.

While you wait for the new stuff, stream all the songs from our debut album for free by visiting our Audio/Video page. If you'd like to buy the album as a CD or as a download, or if you just want selected tracks, check out the "Return to Houdek" store at our distributor CD Baby where everything is on sale! Our album is also available at iTunes and all major online outlets.

We love to play music in our home state. Throw in the beautiful Black Hills, outdoor beer tents and gambling just a stone's throw away, and you've got yourself the can't-miss event of the summer.

Houdek is thrilled to be part of the 21st annual Deadwood Jam! Evey year thousands of fans descend upon historic Deadwood for this premier two-day outdoor festival. We are honored to be sharing the same stage as such distinguished acts as Blues Traveler and Grand Funk Railroad, who will close out the event Saturday, Sept. 17. Houdek takes the stage at 1 p.m. Saturday.

'Tis the season to save on Houdek's debut album "Return to Houdek," featuring 15 original songs that cover a lot of sonic ground: rock, blues, alt-country and folk.

The songs were inspired by our home ground in South Dakota, but could appeal to anyone who has ever traveled a lonely stretch of highway, fallen in love by the riverside, had to say goodbye, rubbed elbows with interesting characters at a bar or wondered about the mysteries of existence -- to cover just some of the themes. So if you're looking for a great deal on good music or a gift for a South Dakotan who is hard to buy for, look no further.

Simply visit our distribution
website at CD Baby and either buy the CD or purchase the album as an MP3 download, both at significantly reduced costs! (You'll need to create a free online account if you don't already have one, but it's a quick and painless process.) And you'll save an additional 10 % if you buy more than one CD at a time.

Give the gift of music this holiday season with a little Houdek during our Houdek Holiday CyberSale.

We started things off by giving away "6th and Medary" during Hobo Days week at SDSU; we entered November with "The Flowing" on the house.

This week we offer track No. 3 from the album, "Coyote Song". This smooth song describes the importance of periodically leaving an urban existence behind to reconnect with nature through camping. Listen for the lush slide guitar, signifying the coyote's howl, at the the song's close.

Simply visit our distribution website at CD Baby and download the free track! (You'll need to create a free online account if you don't already have one, but it's a quick and painless process.)

Houdek will give away a handful of tracks from our debut album "Return to Houdek" over the next month. Simply visit our distribution website at CD Baby and download a free track! (You'll need to create a free online account if you don't already have one, but it's a quick and painless process.)

We'll get things started with track No. 7 from the album, "The Flowing," which contrasts the passion of young love against the languid pace of a small town with the Missouri River providing release. Add tight harmony, mandolin, saxophone, spooky keys and a killer rhythm section, and you've got a song.

We hope you enjoy it, and check back next week for another song on the house.

There are two big events on Houdek’s immediate horizon: 1) the imminent release of the “Return to Houdek: Live at the Grand” DVD; and 2) Hobo Days at the band’s alma mater of SDSU.

The concert/documentary film was produced by Lights Out Productions and captures the live premiere of the songs and stories from “Return to Houdek,” which occurred Oct. 10-11, 2008, at the Grand Opera House in Pierre, S.D. If you’re interested in getting a copy, please e-mail Zeke at Lights Out Productions (check out a preview of the film on our Audio/Video page in the Video section).

So in honor of the upcoming Oct. 23 Jackrabbits homecoming – as well as all our fans who are former, future or current SDSU students – we offer you a sneak peek of the film: a live version of “6th and Medary,” a literal and figurative crossroads in Brookings, S.D.

We hope you enjoy the clip. Go Jacks!
